Kimono Fabric Design Competition is an international design competition sponsored by Japan Textile Dyeing Joint Association to showcase new creative talents in the world.
The purpose of this competition is to engage with design enthusiasts and expand design capabilities and opportunities that kimono decorations can achieve.

This elegant Japanese traditional costume was first worn by people 1300 years ago, has deeply rooted among the people’s heart.
This competition open up to new ideas and creativity. Now the kimono is here for you to design !
This time, we would like to recruit new fabric design. From the pure white silk fabric, we would like to to come up with astounding design of textile you would like to wear. The winner’s design will be displayed in the exhibition in Japan and Europe (Paris, Köln, Amsterdam). Aside from that, Japan expert craftsmen will use a finest quality of silk to turn your design into a wonder artwork. This is a rare opportunity, even in Japan.
The application procedure is simple. Please design your own kimono pattern(s) and tell us your stories as to how you came up with your great ideas. Drawings, illustrations and pictures are accepted. What’s more, the best craftsmen in Japan will dye the finest silk kimonos based on winners' designs, and the finished garments will be exhibited in Japan and Europe.

Draw your original design of the textile on a square paper of 29.7cm length and 21cm width.
On the application form, please write your name, address, email address, and purpose and intention of your design.
Please colored your work. (Partially colored is fine, and you are free to use any kinds of coloring material)

-Each participant can send up to THREE different designs.
-Winner’s designs will be used on works made of silk such as bags, umbrellas, etc.
-Designs which are considered to have an infringement of copyright will be out of selection.
-Please understand that all designs will NOT be returned.
-We only accept designs that have not been sent to other competitions.
-Registration fees is free.
-The deadline is June 20, 2016.
Results will be announced through e-mail by the end of August 2016.

Copyright License Agreement for the use of the winner’s design in Kimono Fabric Design Competition 1) Copyright The copyright of the winning design belong to the winning designer. The winner agrees to grant the use of the winning design under the condition, period, and areas described in the following section to Organizing committee of the Kimono Design Competition. 2) Use Agreement 2-1) Winning design will be displayed in the exhibition held by Organizing committee of the Kimono Design Competition in the period determined above (Up to 6 times per year). 2-2) Trial works like kimono and folding fan will be made based on the winning design with the utilization of Yuzen technique. Depending on the types of trial works, there might be changes in design during the process. In the occasion that significant arrangement have to be made, we will ask for your approval. 2-3) Winning design and the trial works made based on the design will be displayed on the website, pamphlet, introduction paper, etc. 3) Period Three years start from the design was awarded. (2016/8/1-2019/7/31) 4) Zone France, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, and our website. 5) The trial works and pamphlet won’t be sold in any case. Our purpose is to ‘cultural exchange’ and ‘improvement and development of Yuzen technique’. Moreover, every design we will be kept carefully and will not be sold under any circumstance. 6) Certification and Prizes We will distribute certificate and prize to the winning designers. The prize will be: trial works of the winner’s design using Yuzen technique that is worth 50,000 JPY to the 1st designer and 30,000 JPY to the other winning designers. Please notify that this is in exchange with of the copyright under the condition, period, and areas described earlier.

Presently, there are only few top craftsmen left with the skills to make Yuzen-style kimono.
The fabric used in Yuzen is the finest quality of silk made in Japan. There, top craftsmen who has long experience draw pattern on it, thus enabling them to make colorful and elegant kimono with fine patterns. Thanks for their patience and careful dyeing, we can enjoy many wonderful kimono masterpiece.
